Kyneton Local History

Kyneton is a small town located in the Macedon Ranges region of Victoria, Australia, approximately 85km north-west of Melbourne. The town has a rich history, dating back to the mid-19th century, when it was established as a pastoral station and gold rush town.

Early History

The traditional owners of the land that Kyneton now occupies are the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. They lived in the area for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. The first European settler in the area was Major Thomas Mitchell, who explored the region in the 1830s and named it after his friend, the botanist Sir William Hooker. Mitchell's exploration led to the opening up of the area for pastoralists who moved in and established stations.

Gold Rush

The discovery of gold in Victoria in the early 1850s led to a rush of people moving to the area in search of riches. Kyneton was no exception, and by 1856 it was a thriving gold rush town with a population of over 10,000 people. The town had numerous businesses, including hotels, banks, and general stores, as well as a courthouse, police station, and hospital. The gold rush brought people from all over the world to Kyneton, including Chinese miners, who established a large community in the area.

Development and Decline

After the gold rush, Kyneton underwent a period of development, with the railway line reaching the town in 1862 and the establishment of a meat processing industry. The town continued to grow, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving commercial and agricultural centre.

However, the town's fortunes declined in the mid-20th century, with the closure of the meat processing plant and the decline of the agricultural industry. The population of Kyneton fell significantly, and the town became known for its neglected appearance and lack of economic opportunities.

Revival and Renewal

In recent years, Kyneton has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to its residents and community groups. The town has become a popular destination for tourists, with its historic buildings, vibrant arts scene, and reputation as a food and wine destination attracting visitors from all over the world.

Kyneton's main street has been revitalised, with numerous heritage buildings restored and repurposed as cafes, galleries, and boutique stores. The town has also established a reputation as a centre for sustainable living and alternative agriculture, with a number of organic and biodynamic farms in the surrounding area.

The community has also worked hard to preserve the town's history, with numerous museums and historical societies in the area. The Kyneton Museum, located in the town's former bluestone courthouse, tells the story of Kyneton's past, from the Wurundjeri people to the present day.
